Your voter registration is tied to where you reside. As a college student, you need to register at the address where you currently reside, which could be your college address or your family’s address.
If your college address is not your residence
Ensure your registration is Active at your home address. Your registration is tied to your residence, allowing you to vote in all local, state, and federal elections in the county where you’re registered.
If your college address is your residence

Your new residence is in another County in the State of Texas
- You must re-register in your new County by completing any of the following.
- Complete an application and mail it or take it in person to the voter registrar of your new county(Opens in a new window)(Opens in a new window).
- Update your Voter Registration Information Online(Opens in a new window)(Opens in a new window). When the voter’s current county of registration receives notice of this update, the registrar shall forward this notice and the voter’s application to the new county in which the voter resides.
- Send a written request for changes via E-Mail or Mail to the Voter Registrar.
- Please include your current details, such as full name, date of birth, address, and VUID (if available), in your request. Additionally, provide the new information you’re updating to.
- You must re-register in your new County by completing any of the following.

Voting by Mail
If you consider your family’s address as your residence but will be outside your home county during Early Voting and on Election Day, you may qualify to vote by mail.
Voting In-Person
If you’ll be in your hometown during the election, you can vote in person. Use our Vote Center Finder to find the nearest voting location available on or before Election Day.
Voting During Study Abroad
If you’re a U.S. citizen studying abroad, you can register and vote using a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). The FPCA helps U.S. citizens overseas request absentee ballots from their home state election officials.
